As temperatures begin to chill and the landscape descends into dormancy, our lives seem to do the opposite. We stir ourselves into a frenzy, running around shopping for gifts, readying our homes for visitors, and trying to create the perfect holiday celebrations for our families. In this busy time, we often forget to look after ourselves and are left feeling less than jolly.
But, if we take steps to take care of our health and happiness, we can avoid the worst of the winter blues. Today, I thought I would share some steps I take and a few Patina products I use to nurture my well-being so I can enjoy the richness of this season, in hopes that it will help you do the same!
GET COLD
While it may be tempting to tuck in and not leave the fireside during dreary days, your body and mind will thank you if you shed your blanket cocoon and head out into the cold.
I know it seems counterintuitive (and so annoying!), but exposure to cold decreases all the pesky issues, like sickness, stress, and exhaustion, that we find ourselves afflicted with during this season. You don't need to be out there long; even 5 minutes can be helpful!
GET COZY
Life is all about balance, so after you get out in the chilly weather, a great way to calm your body's nervous system is to get cozy. Before you head to bed, or anytime you can find the time, run a nice warm bath, and add your favorite products.
If you don't have a bath, take some extra time in the shower. Add in some lavender or eucalyptus natural bath products to add an additional layer of relaxation!
NOURISH YOUR BODY
Although the cold weather has benefits, it can also leave your skin dry and dull. In the winter, I take an extra moment to dry-brush before I enter the bath or tub - a practice that involves using a firm bristled brush to lightly exfoliate your body, increasing lymphatic drainage and circulation. Beyond the physical benefits, I enjoy taking the extra time to care for myself.
Once I have dried off from my shower, I slather on my favorite body care products to seal in moisture and protect my skin from the harsh conditions that await me outside.
SUPPORT YOUR DIGESTION
The holidays do a number on our digestive systems. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying not to indulge and enjoy your favorite holiday meals, I love a good slice of pie or Christmas cookie! But, I try and prioritize warm, whole foods and drinks, like soups, stews, and tea, as well as limit my sugar intake during the other days of winter.
The strength of our immune system is directly linked to the health of our gut; cold foods, raw vegetables, and sugar can all be difficult for our digestive systems to deal with, so limiting them is a good rule of thumb if you want to stay as healthy as possible during this season. I also like to make sure I am keeping up with my supplement routine, prioritizing digestive and immune-supporting formulas and tonics.
TAKE TIME TO RELAX, REFLECT & LEARN
We are made to live with the seasons, so during the winter, when the earth is most inwardly active as the energy that once lived in the leaves has now moved its way to the roots of the trees, I mirror her. I spend extra time in the evening to reflect - taking stock of the last year and dreaming about what is to come.
Coupled with a nice cup of tea, this quiet time at the end of the day is deeply rejuvenating and allows me to be more present during my days.
If you can afford yourself extra time, this is also a wonderful season to explore a new hobby. Learn how to bake bread, try to crochet, plan a garden for next year (Leila can help you out with that in January, click here for more details!) The extra time inside is a great opportunity to dive into your interests or explore new ones.
I hope that these tips are helpful to you in the upcoming months. I know that they can be difficult for some. Just know that you are not alone in that. Listen to your body, nurture your mind and spirit. Spring will come again, the wildflowers will return, and we will all bloom again.
xx

What a beautifully written post! All of your suggestions are so true. One thing that I also try to do in the winter months is to clean out my closets and collections. As I get older, I find that I don’t need as much.
